I’m Mary Ann Moss and DISPATCH FROM LA is the notebook I carry with me through the world. Inside, on these digital pages,is where I record & store all of the stories I collect. i write about travels. but not always the kind that happen in planes, trains, and automobiles. sometimes i travel to my back yard, or down the block, across town, to my bed for a nap, or up the coast. i get around.
Wherever I go, I usually carry my camera, books, journals and an inky pen. I have a growing collection of visual journals, sketchbooks, and travel journals and I post about them frequently. I jot down my thoughts about ongoing discoveries, curiosities, and crafty experiments. My cat posse assists as needed by biting the heads off my brushes and chewing my shoestrings while I make messes at my art table. You can read more about my travels HERE and peek inside some of my handmade books HERE.
Late last year I applied for and received a leave of absence from my regular day job as a 2nd grade teacher. During my "sabbatical" I intend to get a lot of paint on my clothes, drink a lot of coffee & vodka (not at the same time), read stacks of books, take a zillion photos, build a time machine, stare into space for hours at a time, go on lots of walkabouts through LA, travel abroad, and keep the getaway car packed and ready to explore California.
My sister & I like to play pranks, investigate neighborhood crimes, travel together, and quietly wreak havoc. We think cutting & pasting & drawing & painting is v.v. fun. You can check out her blog HERE.
To make things a little easier for myself when answering emails I’ve come up with a list of the most frequently asked questions I receive. Hopefully you can find what you need below. If not zip me out an email and i'll try and hook you up!
Do you teach at art retreats and gatherings?
I always appreciate the invitations, but at this time I’ll have to politely decline. I’ve got a whole year of doing nothing that’s going to keep me very busy! Also I’m an introverted extrovert and being around too many people taxes my reserves. Think of me like a chimp in the zoo. The fewer people around me the less agitated I get.
I’m new to visual journaling. Can you guide me through the making of a visual journal or travel journal and explain your thought process?
Yes, I’d be happy to do that via the classes I teach on visual journaling + bookbinding, travel journaling, and constructing a shabby journal of scraps HERE. You can also find out plenty of information about my process by reading through THESE posts. You can see inside many of my journals HERE.
